Affiliate Borg
I am an affiliate with a lottery site and have been for a few years now to great success but, I have never really entered the realm of affiliate marketing with products before. Apparently it is supposed to be an ok earner if you have enough traffic (and enough sites) to make it worthwhile.

I get between 200 and 500 uniques a day here, do you think that would be enough to monetize this blog with affiliate products?

I’m not sure, I’ve never been one to recommend stuff just to earn money off it but I have some decent reviews to write about after my new theme is here (still no word from the designer yetI heard from him and it’s probably the best theme I have ever seen!) and it would be nice to offer people that read the reviews a convenient way to purchase the product (and for a little trickle of coins to come my way if they do).

I have seen the likes of TradeDoubler and Amazon associates all over the place, if you use either or both of them I would be interested in hearing your experience of them. Did they make you any money? are they worth it?

How about successful ways that you have monetized your blog? I’m lucky enough to earn a fair amount from my TeamPlayLotto site, full time job and my own company so earning megabucks within a microsecond of blogging time is not really a high priority for me so I’d just like to experiment with some things so I can use the experience for monetizing clients’ sites, if I can get some detailed knowledge of money making website tools then I can pass that along with the clients project (along with an extra charge of course!) and then put some of that money to use for fabulous competitions! …. that would be nice, a self financing contest blog..

Any affiliate experiences you want to share?

I think you need more visitors in order to earn something that counts. I have now on my blog about 200 unique visitors/day and I’ve tried some different affiliates programs, but the income is very, very low. But maybe you can earn more, since you have more visitors than I have. So why don’t you test some affiliates for a month to see what will happen? You have nothing to lose. And after that, maybe you will tell us your conclusions :)

Actually you can make money with low traffic I made money with a few of my niche websites of course the higher amount of traffic the possibility of someone clicking and buying increases but I have found that if someone is searching for something with the intention
to *buy* or they are reading an article you’ve written about a product your review can sell them and they will be wanting to buy what you have recommended.

My alternative healing and cooking website made money when I was getting less than 50 visit per day. In fact I made more in one day with one of those sites than I did on Vegan Momma. Its not always about the traffic although you have the potential to make more with higher traffic.

If I were you I would start now because you are creating a foundation by building links. When people access your site their will be numerous doorways that they can use to access Amazon or another affiliate.
What’s important is to keep at it. Don’t give up and don’t be afraid to try different ways when it comes to affiliate marketing. With anything that I recommend it’s something I’ve researched. The majority are things I personally use or it’s something similar to what I use.

I’m still a small fish with affiliate marketing. I’ve read that some people have made several thousands per quarter using Amazon. I think some of them have a store on their website. That’s impressive.

I occasionally write reviews on my website. I usually make over $100 with my reviews. My reviews are thorough. I cover all the bases. If I see something I like that is less I will write about it. I’ve also made money with direct links. I got those on my own in doing so I did not have to share with a middleman. I have done that with paid posts also.

..and yes you definitely have enough visitors to use Affiliate marketing. It might take a while for people to start purchasing but don’t be discouraged persistence is key.

I use Amazon on my blog, but I don’t heavily promote it because it’s only a personal blog. I do make enough to cover my hosting costs though, mostly from the sale of The Writers and Artists Yearbook which ties in very closely with the topic and the kind of readers I have.

I have heard quite a few bloggers say Amazon isn’t worthwhile, but I suspect many of them have added the code and done little else. It seems to be something you need to work at in the form of writing reviews, highlighting recommended books and so on. It’s not like Adsense, for example, which is quite passive, you don’t promote that.

Kate » I know the types of affiliates that just put up a banner and do nothing else except complain about how crap it was! I have been an affiliate with a large team for some time so I am used to those comments! I am prepared to put a little bit of effort into it!

Opal » thanks for your advice, I appreciate it! I think I will take the track of doing reviews for products that I use or that are similar. I have been researching this a fair bit and it seems that it wont happen overnight, I am happy to do it over the long haul and keep adding an article here and there over time. Eventually, there’ll be enough past articles with affiliate links in them for the income potential to grow as this blog does. I’ll probably pester you some more over the coming months! (I hope you don’t mind)

…also remember even if they don’t purchase what you recommend they might purchase something else from your link so you still receive the commission. I wish the cookie was longer. It’s only 24 hours. My longest, a different company, is good for one year. If the person purchase more items from the company within the year and still has that cookie. I will keep getting paid from my affiliate sale.

Over half of my items have been for other purchases. With one of my recommended products the conversion is about 75%. I’ve written about it extensively and my readers have seen the results in action. I post pictures.

My cooking website has done well with Affiliate marketing. A lot of people purchase have purchased high end cooking appliances.

I don’t do too much recommending there but I do have an appliance page so they can see what I use/recommend and of course it’s linked to the appropriate amazon item. I also give out free recipes. There is a lot of information there. I think my readers trust me.

I have a feeling when I start posting videos my my affiliate sales will increase.

      Pester away!
I’m still a newbie with affiliate marketing but I’m learning that it is a lot like how I run my business. Lots of patience, dedication, and giving as much information to a visitor so they will want to purchase my products.

You were doing well to get them to put up a banner! Some bright sparks I’ve encountered think they just have to sign up, sit back and watch the cash pour in!

I think you are totally ready to monetize. If you can try and find an affiliate that will pay you for leads as well as sales. Helps increase your chances of making a little dough :)

The best one yet is I have several acoounts with betting sites through trade doubler and I get paid for the lifetime of the player not just a one off.

I also email my list with any special offers up and coming like free magazine subscriptions etc. I just plod along and seem to be able to make money So Knowing you, I would imagin you could make it really work for the blog.

      Hi Dawn,
nice to see you found your way here! I saw a Gala casinos advert via tradedoubler that provides a lifetime commission but I want to steer away from hard gaming (I used to work in casinos) because it can cause serious family grief to those that succumb to the dark side of gambling.

thanks for letting me know about your different affiliate companies, I’ll check into them later this week..

Traffic is always good but to determine if it would be good for monetizing the blog I would first ask “What search terms are people coming to your site using?”. If they are looking for free stuff I doubt that would be good (going off the top of my head).

For a more exact example, I have a fishing site that is on page 1 of google for “fishing tips” but people entering that search term are not spenders. People searching for “fishing charters” are. They way I determine that is simply looking at what the “click flippers” (ppc advertisers) are paying for search terms. Those guys do some heavy tracking and will quickly stop bidding on terms that do not convert.
