Dogg has been virtual house trained!

trained doggokidoki! I’ve nearly got this blog settled in, I went off on a few tangents while I developed some widgets and trained a dogg but things seem to be pretty sorted here now. I’m waiting for a verification of this blog from blogexplosion, when that happens traffic should go up a little, now my dogg is trained, it should go up even more when I send it out for a run in the virtual park! I just have to tweak some minor bits of it’s code and setup Apache on my laptop before I let it out.

Later this week I’ll write a detailed post about what I did to get this blog up and running. It might be useful to peeps about to install wordpress 2.2, I’ll provide links and descriptions of all the plugins that I have found to be essential to my previous blogs and also some clever things I did to get this blog noticed and already indexed by google for a few of the keywords and phrases I wanted.

First, work doth beckon…. I’ve been doing nothing but coding for a whole week so it’s time for ‘real’ work to happen :-)

I just *love* the bot.dog…. Does it also give you a list of sites it visits while running around the virtual world?

it can store the sites it visits in a separate file ready to be used later, or it can just automatically visit each site after it visits the persons profile page.

in theory, it could parse all of Eric’s contacts, get their site url, visit their profile page and visit their site to register a given user as a visitor so they see the user as the last person to visit their site and profile.

it’s a little temperamental when it encounters an error or wrongly constructed page so I’m just dealing with that now..

I’ll let you know when it’s done so you can test it if you want…

LOL! That must be a real pain since everyone, especially bloggers on Blogspot, tries to *revamp* their websites and ending up creating errors. Could also be widgets that are poorly constructed that are causing you some trouble.

I just messed it up a fair bit!
I tried to be clever and redo one of the routines so it can take the effort out of entering URL’s but something went awry and now it wont work!

the profile page bit works but the register a hit on the target site isn’t. it was fine before I went out for dinner!!

    damn doggs :-)

Oh no! I hope you get it working back again because it’s probably the coolest thing I’ve seen in awhile.

Wish I was half as smart as you,,, :)

Would love to learn how to design a bot sometime.

well, sorry to say that the dogg has been melted down and his bits used for other codets.

robyn from MBL came by and left a comment saying that bots were definitely not allowed, luckily, by that time I had already decided to not use the dogg to visit everyones pages on MBL! my MBL widget stopped working for a while but came back after she found out that I was not intending to use it!

I’ve also noticed a surge of hits to non existant pages here in my stats, mainly because I tested some scripts and then deleted them after I was finished but people must have seen the referring page as the test page and decided to check it out.

might be worth looking into that to see if it can generate traffic, imagine if you saw a hit from a page called only-cool-blogs.htm, you’d want to see that if you saw it in your stats right? :-)
