xml is good for complex data but a simple link or counter is happy enough to be served as a text or echo out from php. I have never tried ASP, I might take a look at it one day but php is what I'm used to and I'm too lazy to learn a new syntax!

I've typically used XML for AJAX ... you can use anything you want, but the X really does imply XML encoding at the least. I generally use ASP.NET for the server side functionality, so XML is very convenient. It's also easy to debug.

This is a wonderful tutorial you've put together Andy. My boyfriend needs to take a look at this, every time he tries to teach me something computer related he manages to confuse the heck out of me. This is so clear and concise, you deserve some serious props my friend!

Omi » I would definitely learn PHP first if I were to start this programming thing again, I'd like to learn a bit more about css too, I know enough to get me in trouble editing someone elses stylesheet but not enough to make my own from scratch!
