Since CommentLuv got moved to the FiddyP server it has been performing quite well, I think Sharon had some trouble with the site loading slowly over the weekend and I think that’s probably to do with spam comments disprupting the script as there are times when the commentluv script that does the retrieving of the last post gets absolutely hammered.
50,000+ hits to the script each day is a fair amount, I think I need to update commentluv to ignore any comments made with a url that links direct to a file on a site rather than the root. That would probably catch a few of the spam comments from calling the remote script. I have updated the plugin recently to 1.93 but it seems as though the wordpress codex pages haven’t updated in a while. I’ll add some stuff and get it up to 1.94 and press for an update to the pages.
Here’s some hits!..

I am in the process of doing something with all the last blog posts found, right now the script just passes back the html to add to the comment being submitted but for the future I will put in some code that will store statistics in a database which will, eventually, lead to a widget for people to use to display something similar to blogrush but for their own commenters.
I might even get around to doing a back end registration site for it, it might be nice for people to be able to log into a commentluv settings page where they can choose a default feed url for their site which will be used whenever commentluv encounters their registered url.
People could promote a particular post on their page too, log in and set it to display a particular html link for any comment they make on a commentluv enabled blog.
ooh ooh, there could even be stats page to show how many sites display their last blog posts and and and…(anyone know a way to extend the hours in a day?) lol
hmm, what do you think? any ideas for back end features of a commentluv site?

Hi Andy.
That’s a really good idea. Most spammers link directly to a file instead of a root, and all it takes is just one spammer to slow down the server.
Works really quickly now.

You could go quite far with this plugin - creating your own sort of mybloglog community. I think the service would be popular and would get used a lot. I will as always support you how I can with the Drupal plugin.
Andy - thinking about it a bit more a registered area would be beneficial to users in a few ways:
1. You could select which of your blog posts you wish to post when commenting on other sites.
2. You could only select registered commentluv users to be able to post on your site (if commentluv spam becomes a problem).
3. You could build up a friends list of blogs you like to follow that allow commentluv (which can be multi-platform, wordpress, drupal etc).
4. You can keep track of where you have posted comments - there are still so many sites out there that don’t have comment subscriptions that I often post then forget about the site. Equally so this could then be outputted into an RSS feed of blog posts you have recently commented on. Your friends could then see what you have been commenting on.
Ummm, did anybody say mysql???
Definitely not a favourite topic of mine, but it’s just one of those *evils* that must be learned when you are dealing with most open source softwares….
Giving me brain hemmorhage already
I’ll just wait to see what you learn….
Sharons last blog post..How to Deal With Facial Hair
That’s a great idea. It’s awful that people are linking to files…
how many spam comments do you get in a given day? I didn’t realize that spam comments could slow down a site that much.
Andy, mysql is easy plus you have done the hard part in learning php.
I’m half tempted to make it myself and half tempted to get it done professionally…
Andy,
Well I can help you normalise tables and work out the database structure - thats the easy bit really.
You do have a third option - use a CMS like Drupal and just write your own custom modules for it - its pretty easy and again I can help you.
Getting it done professionally will just waste money when you already have the skills.

Andy-
Thanks for continuing to put so much of your time and energy into developing this plugin. It is a really great tool to get your blog posts noticed.
I will really be looking forward to the chance to pick which of my posts are used. I have been known to NOT post a new post for a while so I can get maximum mileage for a good post from my comments on CommentLuv blogs.

Some excellent stuff on the burner for sure. I’m a little confused though, I thought the ability to pick a post to display was already scheduled for v2?

Dennis: well, the proof of concept worked but I wanted the non javascript one to be fully functioning at high capacity before I started a javascript one. It requires quite a bit of code and it was fairly messy as I’ve never done javascript before. it will take some work to make it into a package capable of being installed somewhere.
Webalizer, awesome! Thanks for the trip down memory lane to 1999!

Wow, 50,000 server hits due to comment luv! I never check my server log, relying solely on Google Analytics. I think I’m going to have a look now….
now if u really wanna see improvements, try implementing the keyword luv plugin. Then you will see an even bigger increase.
Andy, if you have managed to put CommentLuv together in PHP (which you admitted to not being skilled at) then MySQL will be a breeze for you. I have been building PHP/MySQL sites for over 8 years, all custom coded from scratch and picking up MySQL was the easiest bit. Oh and I am self taught too, everything was learnt from books and online resources.
I think Pete White’s suggestions 1 and 4 would be the best features I would look for.
Proxys last blog post..uvoy.net
Andy, did you get anywhere with this? I was thinking that you could also use the service to cache members recent posts so that there is less fetching work (and faster responses) for regular posters?
Peter Whites last blog post..Finally I Have an iPhone!
Nice idea,I’ll give it a try.
The registration bit where some one an setup the default site to take your last comment from is a brilliant idea. When you have more than a few blogs which is the case with many of us, this feature will give the user better control.

Am MUCH liking CommentLuv! Although my blog(s) is/are definitely low-traffic, I like being able to ‘pay’ my commenters for their efforts.
Now, if only I could ‘pay’ spammers by passing along negative page rank.
